![]() ![]() ![]() The fede ring, being a band consisting of two hands clasped in betrothal, is another historical custom of Europe that ostensibly dates from antiquity. The object of this style of ring was to render it very difficult to put on the finger properly such that, if the wife removed it, her husband would know. Also, in the Middle East the puzzle ring was a historical custom: this ring consisted of several pieces that joined together into a cohesive band when worn properly. For example, see the image below of the Byzantine ring depicting Christ uniting bride and groom. Other styles ĭifferent cultures used many other historical styles of wedding ring. It was a band of sterling silver inscribed with a poem or "poesy". The poesy ring was a style of ring that was popular during the Renaissance era. Subsequently, the wife wore the combined ring. The bride and groom both wore one of these bands after their engagement, and the two bands were reunited during the wedding ceremony. Similar to the puzzle ring, the gimmel ring consisted of two interlocking bands. When Persia was conquered by Greeks, the engagement ring tradition was picked up and later was adopted by Romans when they conquered Greece. She has a ring in her ring finger representing her marriage to the king Untash Naprisha of Elam. The statue of Napir Asu held in Louvre museum is an example of the Persian tradition of wearing engagement ring. When it came to marriage, the ring was worn on the fourth finger of the left hand so the symbol of commitment to marriage was always carried closer to the heart. The ring is held in the left hand, because it is closer to the heart. Later, the tradition was cemented in Zoroastrian symbol of Faravahar to represent devotion to the god, but it was also used in personal commitments and contracts with others. It was the Persians who initiated the tradition of ring to represent commitment in contracts, starting with the Mehr Ring in Mithraism which had strong following at the time.
